What to Do When a Pediatric Test Result Never Comes Back: A Parent's Follow-Up Guide

October 26, 2026 · 5 min read · ClearPath Pediatrics

You remember the appointment. Your child had the blood drawn, the scan done, or the swab taken — and the office said, "We'll call you if anything comes up." Two weeks pass. Three. Nothing. Now you're wondering: did the result come back normal, or did it simply slip through the cracks? "No news is good news" is a comforting phrase, but it's not a reliable system. Here's how to follow up calmly and effectively, without assuming the worst.

This guide is about organization and communication — how to chase down a result and make sure the right person has seen it. It is not about interpreting what any result means. That part always belongs to your child's licensed providers.

Start by Confirming the Test Was Actually Completed

Before you assume a result is lost, confirm the test was done and sent where it needed to go. A result can stall at several points: the sample never reached the lab, the lab processed it but routed it to the wrong provider, or the result arrived but no one flagged it for review. Knowing where it stalled tells you who to call.

Gather what you have first: the date of the test, which clinic or facility performed it, and the ordering provider's name. If you have patient portal access, log in and look under "Results" or "Lab & Imaging." Sometimes the result is sitting there, visible to you, before anyone has called to discuss it.

How Long Should You Wait Before Following Up on a Pediatric Test Result?

Most routine labs return within a few days to about a week; imaging and specialized tests can take longer. As a general rule, if you haven't heard anything within one to two weeks and no one gave you a specific timeline, it's reasonable to follow up. You never need to wait silently just because the office said they'd call. A polite check-in is a normal, expected part of being an engaged parent — not a nuisance.

Who to Call and What to Say

Call the office of the provider who ordered the test — they are responsible for receiving and acting on it, even if a different facility ran it. Keep your request simple and specific:

  • "My child had a [test] on [date]. I haven't received the results. Can you confirm they've come back and been reviewed?"
  • Ask: "Has the ordering provider seen this result?" A result that arrived but wasn't reviewed is just as risky as one that's missing.
  • If the test was run by an outside lab or imaging center, ask whether the office received the report, and get the facility's phone number so you can follow up there if needed.

Write down who you spoke with, the date, and what they told you. If they promise a callback, ask when — and note that date so you have a clear point to follow up again.

What If the Office Can't Find It?

If the ordering office has no record of the result, call the facility that performed the test directly. Ask them to confirm it was completed and to resend the report to your provider. You can request that a copy also be released to you through the portal or by secure fax or mail. Then close the loop: a day or two later, call the ordering office again to confirm they received the resent report and that it reached the right provider.

How Do I Keep a Missing Result From Happening Again?

Build a simple tracking habit. Each time your child has a test ordered, write down the test name, the date, who ordered it, and the expected turnaround. Keep a running "open loops" list and cross items off only when you've confirmed the result was received and reviewed. That one page can catch problems weeks before they'd otherwise surface.

At ClearPath Pediatrics, our RN care navigators help families build exactly this kind of tracking system and make the follow-up calls when results go quiet across multiple specialists and labs — so you're not left wondering.
